Addiction happens when a person no longer has control over the use of a substance such as alcohol, drugs, or nicotine, even though it has caused negative and harmful effects on one’s body.
It chooses no age, gender, race, or status. In 2018, American adults and minors aged 12 years and above who struggled with substance use disorder reached more than 20 million. That number is rising at present. People turn to drugs or other substances for various reasons. This could range from getting high, being energized, feeling good, forgetting problems to increasing performance.
Some of the substances that are the subject of cases of addiction in the United States, says the National Institute on Drug Abuse, are as follows:
- Alcohol: Almost all liquor and beverages like beer, wine, whiskey, rum, or gin have alcohol.
- Bath Salts: This is different from Epsom salts used in taking a bath. It is also called White Lightning, Flakka, Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky, and Cosmic Blast.
- Cocaine: Also known as Coke, Flake, Crack, Snow, Coca, or Blow.
- E-Cigarette: The addictive element in e-cigs, vapes, pipes, or pens is nicotine and flavorings.
- Heroin: Also called Smack, H, Horse, Black tar, and Junk.
- Marijuana: This is an organic substance and is sometimes referred to as weed, herb, grass, pot, or boom.
- MDMA: This is the drug often used at parties popularly known as Ecstasy, Molly, or Love Drug.
- Meth: Its complete name is Methamphetamine. Its slang names are Crystal, Chalk, Ice, and Glass.
- Pain Medicine: Intake of pain medicine is legal if the doctor’s prescription is followed. However, others turn to Opioids to get high.
- Spice (K2): Users also refer to it as Black Mamba, K2, Kush, Joker, or Herbal Incense.
- Other Drugs People Use and Misuse: LSD or Acid, PCP or Angel Dust, GHB, Rohypnol or Roofies, Ketamine which is used for animals who are in pain, and even everyday home items like spray cans, glue, markers, and cleaners that contain inhalants are also subject of abuse.
What makes consumption of these substances difficult to stop is their effect on the body and how it has grown accustomed to and dependent on them. Once the intake is instantly stopped, the body is shocked by its absence and starts to exhibit withdrawal symptoms, ranging from sweating, nervousness, fatigue, insomnia, shaking or seizures, depression, restlessness, irritability, appetite changes, paranoia, and many others.
Addiction to drugs, alcohol, and other substances is more than just a bad habit to break. It demands serious treatment and intervention because people who have substance abuse disorders have lost control of their addiction. For some, their addiction has taken over their lives.
Out of the millions with some kind of addiction, only 10% sought and received treatment. Many factors are at play that result in the under-treatment of substance use disorder. It is not only because some refused treatment but because most do not have access to any kind of treatment. There is a shortage of rehabilitation facilities, and in some areas, there are no available facilities that address the disorder.
Some get ahold of their addiction in the earlier stages and effectively stop it before it worsens. Others require major treatment or intervention and, in severe cases, isolation. If you are undergoing treatment, whether voluntarily or not, it is a big help to have a support group or something that will keep you on track to building a healthier lifestyle.
The NIDA or the National Institute on Drug Abuse promotes education and improvement of individual and public health by using science to determine the causes and consequences of drug use and addiction and find solutions to this worldwide concern. It has allocated funds and grants to various institutions dedicated to addressing disorders related to substance abuse.
Aside from government and non-government agencies providing support for those struggling with their addictions and who want to be rehabilitated, the most important help must come from the individual. After all, you cannot help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves.
Every individual requires a different treatment and rehabilitation plan when it comes to managing their addictions. Some methods may work for some, while it may not bring any progress at all for others. If you have tried all available techniques and systems out there, but you feel that none of them best suits your needs, you don’t have to fret.
Fortunately, science and technology have made it possible to support these individuals through online services. Telehealth programs have made rehabilitation and treatment bearable and successful for many. It has also ensured continuous treatment for those discharged from facilities, especially now that we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Just like in actual in-facility rehabilitation, telehealth programs are also evidence-based. The success can be attributed to the fact that more than 260 million Americans are smartphone users, making this method more accessible and other advantages linked to its use. Aside from the convenience, comfort, and accessibility telehealth rehab offers, it also removes the factor of being stigmatized for their case.
Below are the 15 Best Online Addiction Services that will show you exactly why telehealth rehabilitation programs will work for you:

Lionrock Recovery
Fee: | Assessed by capacity to pay | Accessibility: | Zoom and mobile app; 24/7 private mobile social network; |
Insurance: | Accepted |
Why Lionrock Recovery?
It is accredited by the Joint Commission, which is an independent non-profit organization that upholds and supports quality and safety in health care, always pushing for improvement and excellence.
All counseling at Lionrock is done through Zoom. They have been providing online addiction treatment to those who need it for a decade now. Their years of experience in bringing together their knowledge, expert addiction counselors, and technology have proven successful.
Every treatment for every individual is always the right fit because all treatment starts with an in-depth assessment of the client and his or her case by an admissions counselor. This often leads to determining the root cause of the addiction. The treatment plan then revolves around the issue of making effective changes. It is then adjusted along your journey to better suit your current needs. The appointments are patterned and scheduled according to the client’s commitments – work, family, hobbies, or lifestyle.
If you still have doubts or in denial as to whether you have a substance use disorder, you can take the quiz posted on their website to have an initial assessment of yourself.
You will never feel alone in your treatment journey as Lionrock builds a community of clients that offers support to each other. Aside from the main treatment plan, clients are given access to support group conferences and workshops at no additional cost.
Lionrock is also held to HIPAA standards when it comes to keeping its clients’ information confidential, and video conferences are encrypted according to Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
